Buddha Life Story Thangka – 63×83 cm, Classic Grade
Shakyamuni Buddha sits at the centre on a lotus throne, touching the earth with his right hand and holding a blue bowl in his left, with two disciples standing in aureoles beside him and a blue garuda, nagas, small riders on golden animals and blue elephants on the arch of his throne.
Around him, scenes set among hills, palaces and trees tell the story of his life: Queen Maya's dream of a white elephant at the upper left and his birth in the grove below it, a Buddha teaching among Buddhas in pink clouds at the top, the prince in the palace at the left and his ride from it at the lower left, a white stairway at the right, his enlightenment amid the armies of Mara at the lower right and his passing into nirvana at the lower centre.
Two lines of Om Mani Padme Hum in Tibetan script run along the base, inside a painted border of dark blue dragons, flowers and auspicious symbols on a maroon edge.
Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.
Size: 63 × 83 cm (24.8 × 32.7 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →
Also in this painting: Queen Maya; Mara; the parinirvana
