Shakyamuni Buddha sits at the centre on a lotus throne, his right hand touching the earth and his left holding a blue bowl, framed by an arch of blue elephants, riders on golden animals and sea creatures with a blue garuda at the top, with two disciples standing in rayed haloes below him.

Scenes of his life fill the painting among palaces, trees and hills: Queen Maya's dream of a white elephant at the upper left and his birth in the grove below it, the Buddha teaching in the heavens at the top, the chariot ride at the upper right, his years of fasting at the lower centre, his enlightenment amid the armies of Mara at the lower right, and his passing into nirvana below the throne.

A panel of Tibetan script runs along the bottom, inside a dark red border of blue dragons and pink flowers.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 46 × 54 cm (18.1 × 21.3 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

Also in this painting: Queen Maya; Mara; the parinirvana
