Buddha Life Story Thangka – 45×53 cm, Classic Grade
Shakyamuni Buddha sits at the centre on a lotus throne, his right hand touching the earth and his left holding a dark blue bowl, with two disciples standing in rayed aureoles at either side and a black garuda, riders on deer and black elephants in the arch behind him, below a roundel of three Buddhas on a cloud.
Around him, scenes set among palaces, trees, stupas and hills tell the story of his life, from Queen Maya's dream of a white elephant at the upper left and his birth beneath a tree below it, through a body carried on a pole at the right and meditation beneath a tree at the lower centre, to his enlightenment amid the dark armies of Mara at the lower right and his passing into nirvana just below the throne.
Two lines of Tibetan script run across a panel at the foot, and a border of dark dragons and flowers frames the whole, painted in olive, brown and gold-coloured tones.
Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.
Size: 45 × 53 cm (17.7 × 20.9 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →
Also in this painting: Queen Maya; Mara
