The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls of red, yellow, blue, white and black around a pink eight-pointed flower in a small latticed square at the centre, with a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side, small dharma wheels and rows of blue syllables on the walls, and white animals on the courtyards.

Around it run a ring of flowers, a ring of blue water, a red band of coloured Kalachakra mantra syllables with blue and orange dharma wheels, black and green rings, and a rim of orange, black, green and yellow scroll patterning.

The circle sits on a blue ground that lightens around it, with orange and pink scrollwork and offerings of a conch, a mirror, fruit and cymbals in the corners.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 55 × 55 cm (21.7 × 21.7 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
