The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls of orange, red, blue, white and black around a small square holding a pink eight-pointed flower, with dharma wheels and syllables in the courts, white animals in the outer courts and a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side.

Around it run a ring of gold-coloured scrolls, a ring of flowers, a ring of blue water, red and black bands carrying coloured Kalachakra mantra syllables and dharma wheels, an olive-green ring and a patchwork rim of gold-coloured and coloured scrollwork, set on a ground that shades from pale blue to deep blue at the corners.

Offerings of the senses fill the corners among red and orange cloud scrolls: a conch, a mirror, fruit and cymbals, inside a dark grey border.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 55 × 55 cm (21.7 × 21.7 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
