The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls around a small lattice-patterned centre with a four-petalled flower, with a tiered gateway on each side and small animals in the gateway courts, drawn in gold-coloured line work on black.

A ring of gold-coloured cloud scrolls, a broad ring of swirling gold-coloured waves and a black band of Kalachakra mantra syllables painted in green, red, blue, yellow and pink, with eight gold-coloured dharma wheels, surround it, closed by a broad rim of gold-coloured flame scrolls.

Gold-coloured cloud scrolls fill the four corners with offerings of the senses, among them cymbals, fruit and a conch, inside a thin white line.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 56 × 56 cm (22.0 × 22.0 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
