The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls drawn in gold-coloured line work on black around a small square centre, with dharma wheels and syllables in the courts and a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side, its doorways picked out in silver-white.

Around it run a ring of gold-coloured cloud scrolls, a ring of blue water, a black band of coloured Kalachakra mantra syllables with gold-coloured and silver-white dharma wheels, and a rim of alternating gold-coloured and silver-white cloud scrolls.

Offerings of the senses fill the black corners: a conch, a mirror, fruit and cymbals, drawn in gold-coloured and silver-white line work, inside a thin white border.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 56 × 56 cm (22.0 × 22.0 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
