The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls around a small silver-coloured centre with a flower, with a tiered gateway on each side and small animals in the gateway courts, drawn in gold-coloured line work on black.

A ring of gold-coloured flowers and cloud scrolls, a broad ring of silver-coloured waves and a band of gold-coloured Kalachakra mantra syllables with eight dharma wheels surround it, closed by a rim of alternating gold-coloured and silver-coloured cloud scrolls, with gold-coloured key-pattern corners holding vajras among cloud scrolls.

A border of panels framed in white lines runs around the whole, with dragons and birds among gold-coloured clouds, a lotus, an endless knot and vases.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 56 × 56 cm (22.0 × 22.0 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
