The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls drawn in silver-coloured line work on black, with gold-coloured inner walls and gateways, around a small latticed square holding a gold-coloured flower at the centre, with a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side and small dharma wheels and syllables on the walls.

Around it run a ring of silver-coloured cloud scrolls, a ring of blue waves, a black band of Kalachakra mantra syllables in red, green, yellow and blue with gold-coloured and silver-coloured dharma wheels, and a rim of alternating gold-coloured and silver-coloured cloud patterning.

Gold-coloured and silver-coloured scrollwork fills the black corners around offerings, among them a conch and cymbals.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 56 × 56 cm (22.0 × 22.0 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
