The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls of blue, orange, white, pink and black set with small red and black wheels, around a dark square holding a pink and violet pattern at the centre, with a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side, animals on coloured panels at the gateways and blue, white and orange flowers in the court around it.

A wide ring of blue water, a red band of multicoloured Kalachakra mantra syllables with eight blue and orange dharma wheels, a black ring, a green ring and a band of scroll panels in yellow, green, white, red and black surround it, set on a red ground.

Red scrolls edged in gold-coloured line work fill the corners, with offerings of the senses: a conch, a mirror on a stand, fruit and cymbals.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 54 × 54 cm (21.3 × 21.3 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
