The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls of blue, red, orange, white, black and gold-coloured line work around a small dark lattice-patterned centre with a dark red eight-petalled flower, with a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side, black and red wheels set along the courts and small animals in the gateways.

A ring of flowers, rings of blue water, a red band of coloured Kalachakra mantra syllables with dharma wheels, black and teal bands and a rim of orange, grey, green and black scrolls surround it, on an orange ground glowing yellow around the circle, with red and blue cloud scrolls and offerings of the senses in the corners: cymbals, fruit, a mirror and a conch.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 54 × 54 cm (21.3 × 21.3 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
