The Kalachakra palace is drawn in gold-coloured line work on black, its nested square walls edged in red and green around a small red square holding a red and white flower at the centre, with silver-grey panels at the inner gateways, a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side and animals drawn on pink panels at the outer gateways.

Gold-coloured cloud scrolls dotted with pink fill the court around it, inside a ring of blue water, a band of multicoloured Kalachakra mantra syllables with eight gold-coloured dharma wheels and a rim of gold-coloured flame-like scrolls.

Gold-coloured cloud scrolls fill the black corners, with offerings among them including cymbals, a white lotus and a conch, inside a grey border.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 55 × 55 cm (21.7 × 21.7 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
