The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls drawn in gold-coloured line work on black around a small square holding a silver-coloured four-petalled flower at the centre, with a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side, small dharma wheels and rows of syllables on the walls, and animals drawn in gold-coloured line work by the gateways.

Gold-coloured scrollwork set with silver-coloured jewels surrounds the palace, followed by a ring of silver-coloured waves, a black band of large gold-coloured mantra syllables with eight gold-coloured dharma wheels, and a rim of alternating gold-coloured and silver-coloured cloud patterning.

Gold-coloured ribbons tie offerings in the black corners, a conch, a mirror, a fruit and cymbals, inside a thin white line.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 55 × 55 cm (21.7 × 21.7 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
