The Kalachakra palace rises in nested square walls of red, yellow, blue, white, green and black around a small square latticed with pink flowers at the centre, with a gateway topped by a tiered arch on each side and blue dharma wheels, pink flowers and small orange animals on the courtyards.

Around it run a ring of blue water, red and orange rings, a black band of coloured Kalachakra mantra syllables with dharma wheels, and a rim of orange, blue and gold-coloured scroll patterning.

A great halo of zigzag rays, white around the circle and deepening to green at the edge, sits on a dark brown ground, with a green endless knot and scrollwork in each corner, inside a blue border.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 45 × 45 cm (17.7 × 17.7 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Kalachakra Mandala

The Kalachakra ("Wheel of Time") mandala shows the palace of the deity Kalachakra from above: nested square walls with a gateway on each side, set inside rings of fire, vajras, water and mantra syllables. It is one of the most complex mandalas in Tibetan Buddhism, and its geometry follows strict rules handed down by painters for centuries.
