Milarepa Thangka – 51×76 cm, Master Grade
Milarepa sits on an antelope skin on a rocky seat, his long black hair falling over his shoulders and white rings in his ears, wearing white cotton robes patterned in gold-coloured line work and a red meditation belt across his chest, his right hand reaching down beside his knee and his left holding a white bowl heaped with green.
Stacked texts rest behind him on the left and a yellow and green domed hat on the right, with a green pot at his side, framed by a green halo with a gold rim and an aureole of blue rays inside a gold-coloured border set with red and blue roundels, and a pink peony and lotuses rise above against a blue sky of coloured clouds and snow peaks.
In the green meadow below, a hunter draws his bow at the lower left, a grey dog lies at the centre and a deer rests at the right, among offerings of jewels and tusks, with a white crane by the river, inside a red border.
Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.
Size: 51 × 76 cm (20.1 × 29.9 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →
Also in this painting: the hunter Gonpo Dorje
