Wheel of Life Thangka – 94×119 cm, Master Grade
Red Yama, three-eyed and crowned with five skulls hung with strings of beads, grips the Wheel of Life in his hands and clawed feet and bites its rim, against gold-coloured flames, with a striped skin hanging below the wheel.
At the hub a rooster, a snake and a pig circle one another inside a half-white, half-black band of figures rising and falling; a standing Buddha appears in each of the six realms of rebirth, one of them playing a lute in the realm of the gods, and the outer rim shows the twelve links in small scenes.
A white bodhisattva stands at the upper left and a standing Buddha points from the upper right, with two white figures flying among the clouds above and two dragons among blue and grey clouds below, inside a dark red border of dragons in cartouches, with dharma wheels at the top, bottom and sides.
Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.
Size: 94 × 119 cm (37.0 × 46.9 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Wheel of Life
The Wheel of Life is held by Yama, lord of death. At its hub, a rooster, a snake and a pig stand for desire, anger and ignorance; around them are the six realms of rebirth and, on the rim, the twelve links of dependent origination. A Buddha outside the wheel points to the way out.
Also known as Riduk.
