Dark blue Yama, crowned with five skulls and with a third eye, grips the Wheel of Life in his hands, feet and jaws, his orange tiger skin and its tail hanging below.

At the hub, a white bird, a snake and a black pig circle each other, a ring half white and half dark shows figures rising and falling, a standing Buddha appears in each of the six realms of rebirth, and the outer rim shows the twelve links of dependent origination.

A white bodhisattva stands in the upper left corner and a standing Buddha pointing towards the wheel in the upper right, with flying figures among the clouds between them, and two dark dragons curl among the hills below, on a dark blue ground scattered with gold-coloured dots and flowers.

A border of pink flowers, dragons and auspicious symbols frames the whole.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 64 × 83 cm (25.2 × 32.7 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Wheel of Life

The Wheel of Life is held by Yama, lord of death. At its hub, a rooster, a snake and a pig stand for desire, anger and ignorance; around them are the six realms of rebirth and, on the rim, the twelve links of dependent origination. A Buddha outside the wheel points to the way out.

Also known as Riduk.
