Brown Yama, with three eyes, flaming brows and a crown of five skulls, grips the Wheel of Life in his fanged jaws, clawed hands and feet, with a striped orange tail hanging below the wheel.

At the hub, a white rooster, a snake and a black pig circle one another inside a ring of figures rising on a light half and falling on a dark half; a standing Buddha appears in each of the six realms of rebirth, crowded with small figures, palaces and landscapes, and the outer rim shows the twelve links of dependent origination in separate panels.

A white bodhisattva and a pointing Buddha stand in aureoles of gold-coloured rays in the upper corners, with flying figures among the clouds between them and two dragons among clouds and hills below, and a dark border of dragons and flowers frames the whole inside a maroon edge.

Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.

Size: 63 × 81 cm (24.8 × 31.9 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →

About Wheel of Life

The Wheel of Life is held by Yama, lord of death. At its hub, a rooster, a snake and a pig stand for desire, anger and ignorance; around them are the six realms of rebirth and, on the rim, the twelve links of dependent origination. A Buddha outside the wheel points to the way out.

Also known as Riduk.
