Wheel of Life Thangka – 63×82 cm, Classic Grade
Brown Yama, with three eyes, a crown of five skulls and bared fangs, grips the Wheel of Life in his claws and jaws, against a dark blue ground scattered with gold-coloured flowers.
At the hub, a white bird, a spotted snake and a dark pig circle one another, ringed by a pale path of rising figures and a dark path of falling ones; the six realms of rebirth fill the wheel with crowded scenes of figures, palaces, animals and fire, and small scenes run around the rim.
A Buddha in a palace sits among clouds at the upper left and a Buddha with attendants at the upper right, and a border of dragons in blue and gold-coloured line work frames the whole, inside a maroon border.
Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.
Size: 63 × 82 cm (24.8 × 32.3 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →
About Wheel of Life
The Wheel of Life is held by Yama, lord of death. At its hub, a rooster, a snake and a pig stand for desire, anger and ignorance; around them are the six realms of rebirth and, on the rim, the twelve links of dependent origination. A Buddha outside the wheel points to the way out.
Also known as Riduk.
