Wheel of Life Thangka – 44×56 cm, Classic Grade · MH-2713
Dark blue Yama, three-eyed with flaming brows and crowned with five skulls on lotuses, grips the wheel in his clawed hands and feet and in his jaws, with a striped tiger skin below it.
At the hub a long-necked white bird, a spotted snake and a blue pig circle one another, inside a ring of small figures on a light half and a dark half; around them the six realms fill the spokes, from the gods' palace above blue water and snow peaks at the top to the hells in flames at the bottom, with small figures along the rim.
A Buddha sits in a palace among clouds at the upper left and a Buddha stands pointing in an oval at the upper right, against a blue sky with golden-yellow and blue clouds, inside a border of dragons, flowers and clouds.
Hand-painted in Nepal on cotton canvas.
Size: 44 × 56 cm (17.3 × 22.0 in), including the painted border. Hand-painted, so allow ±1–2 cm. Size guide →
About Wheel of Life
The Wheel of Life is held by Yama, lord of death. At its hub, a rooster, a snake and a pig stand for desire, anger and ignorance; around them are the six realms of rebirth and, on the rim, the twelve links of dependent origination. A Buddha outside the wheel points to the way out.
Also known as Riduk.
