Yamantaka Thangka – 86×123 cm, Master Grade
Black Yamantaka stands at the centre with a horned buffalo head, its red muzzle open and tongue out, tiers of wrathful faces rising to a peaceful face at the top and a great fan of arms edged in white line work, embracing his consort and holding a skull cup heaped with offerings at his heart, his many legs on a lotus base patterned in gold-coloured lattice over trampled figures.
Painted in the black-and-gold style before dark red and gold-coloured flames, he is surrounded by smaller figures: Tsongkhapa sits among clouds at the top centre with two smaller figures on each side, a seated many-armed deity in union is at the upper left and a standing many-armed deity in union in flames at the upper right, and wrathful protectors sit and stand in flames down either side.
Along the bottom Vaishravana with a victory banner rides a snow lion, a protector embracing a consort rides a buffalo, six-armed Mahakala stands on an elephant-headed figure, Palden Lhamo rides a mule and another protector sits at the far right, with a round bowl of offerings at the bottom centre, inside a maroon border.

Yamantaka, "destroyer of death", is the wrathful form of Manjushri. He has a buffalo head, many arms and legs, and is often shown in union with his consort, trampling figures that stand for death and ignorance.
