Shakyamuni Buddha sits at the centre on a throne, his right hand touching the earth and his left holding a bowl, framed by an ornate arch with a garuda at the top, with two standing Buddhas in rayed haloes below him.
Scenes of his life fill every part of the painting among palaces, hills and clouds: Queen Maya's dream of the white elephant at the upper left, the Buddha teaching in the heavens at the top, and his passing into nirvana below the throne. A band of Tibetan script runs along the bottom inside a patterned border.
